Elena & Anika

Keynote by Anika Schwarzlose & Elena Khurtova

Elena Khurtova (she/her) and Anika Schwarzlose (she/her) are interdisciplinary artists and researchers, who will introduce their individual and shared perspectives on the subject of artistic engagement with archives.

Both artists work on the intersections of art, ecology, and technology – subjects which they engage with through the prism of archival work. Traversing collections of still and moving image to exploring the memory of soils, they aim to expand existing notions of what constitutes an archive.

Departing from their individual practices, Khurtova &  Schwarzloses keynote will focus on their collaborative project Residue and its methodology of accessing and reinterpreting archives connected to the former weapons factory Hembrug.

Workshop Analoge Film

Workshops, Masterclasses & Short Film Screening

Workshop Analogue film

Analogue film, what does it look like, how does it feel and what can you do with it? Experienced filmmakers and experts in analogue cinematography Erik Wesselo, BarBara Hanlo and Tessa Janssen let you experience what analogue film is exactly. They bring rolls of Super 8 film, shot by amateurs and let you make a new montage in Super 8 edit sets with cutting and pasting. Of course with a screening on a Super 8 projector.

*The workshop operates on a 'first come, first served' basis. Spaces are limited, so be sure to show up early to secure your spot!

Masterclass Copyright & Licensing by Dennis Hekker

This masterclass, given by our in-house legal department, will touch upon the basics of copyright law, licensing and creative commons. You will learn to navigate yourself within the Dutch legal system, discover the possibilities and legal uses of reusing existing materials and to protect (and open up) your own work. Via case-studies, theory will be linked to practical examples and there will also be room to look at public domain, portrait right, right to quote and to ask questions.

Short Film Screening and Q&A with Festus Toll &  Daria Kiseleva

The Black Pete Files (2023) is an archival essay by Festus Toll about the birth, life and death of the traditional Dutch figure Black Pete, that researches the journey of Black Pete using footage from broadcasters and family films. From its origin as Sinterklaas companion, to the problematic and racist character that divided a part of Dutch society.

Haunting Futures (2022)  is a short film by Daria Kiseleva and explores manifestation of imagination in utopian ideas, political imaginaries and carnival celebrations. It speculates about the unrealised futures haunting social, political and cultural realities. The film is based on the documentation of carnival celebrations in the Netherlands, as a manifestation of subconscious imagination and popular culture.
