The Winter School is about providing practical knowledge: we start with the basis for digital preservation of audiovisual materials and finish with mapping participants' own insights and policy on conserving them. Topics we will discuss during the Winter School include:
- Risks for digital durability,
- Applying OAIS model for audiovisual collections,
- Digital preservation planning,
- Ingest & acquisition,
- File formats & data management,
- Data storage and migration.
The training will be alternated with short, educational visits to Sound & Vision's storage and digitisation facilities. Situated in the heart of the Dutch broadcast environment, Sound & Vision features a state-of-the-art in-house infrastructure which will be demonstrated in detail. Also, there will be ample time to get to know the other participants of the versatile group of national and international Winter School participants.
Winter School extended
During the fourth day, the Winter School deals with substantive questions about the application of a digital preservation approach for audiovisual material. This work contains both organizational and technical components. On the last day of this extended edition we will discuss the technical actions involved in receiving and storing audiovisual files. Using practical examples we practice with freely available applications and we focus on the content of audiovisual files, converting files without losing important characteristics, and checking files for their integrity and authenticity.

We are currently finalising the 4-day programme. Guest speakers will be officially announced on the Winter School website.
