DigiBIC: Supporting SMEs in the Digital & Creative Industries

January 24-25 Palais des Académies, Brussels

about DigiBIC

The DigiBICnetwork brings together European leaders in research, innovation, industry and finance in order to optimise the deployment of existing best practice, technology and tools in the digital and creative industries sector and to support interaction and cooperation between network members in order to identify and respond to new industry challenges and opportunities. The Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision is one of the partners in DigiBIC. The project is financed by the FP7 programme and started in December 2010 with a duration of 30 months. In these 30 months the following objectives will be met:

  • To create a permanent, sustainable and respected European network to support the continued growth of the digital and creative industries.
  • To engage with regional, national and European leaders in research and innovation in order to support and encourage their use of the DigiBIC platform to deploy research results and to engage with industry end-users in identifying and responding to new industry challenges and opportunities.
  • To overcome the challenges inherent to the digital and creative industries sector in order to engage directly with end-users, to support and encourage their use of the DigiBIC network and platform in order to optimise the deployment of existing best practice, technology and tools and to engage with the research community in identifying and developing solutions to new industry challenges and opportunities.
  • To establish the DigiBIC network and online resources centre as an effective 'brokerage' mechanism between the different communities of interest.
  • To ensure the widest possible involvement in and exploitation of the DigiBIC network and online platform.

annual EBN reception and seminar

DigiBIC is coordinated by the European Business & Innovation Centre Network (EBN). This year, the EBN organized its annual reception on January 24 with subsequently a seminar on January 25. The seminar programme focused on DigiBIC and contained various sessions about supporting SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) in the digital and creative industry. This is exactly the main goal of the DigiBIC project and the seminar therefore offered an excellent opportunity to promote the project amongst its end-users. In general, the various presentations on Tuesday showed that clustering is very important, either through a virtual space or through SMEs that are physically clustered. Questions from the audience indicated that there is still a gap between the industry and research institutions. Where research usually leads to raw demos and technologies, the industry is looking for finished products with included services. This is one of the reasons why a project like DigiBIC is of great importance: by bringing together a consortium that contains research partners and partners from the industry, this gap can be reduced.
