Winter School for Audiovisual Archiving

Each year, Sound & Vision organises the Winter School for Audiovisual Archiving, a four-day one-of-a-kind training that provides participants the practical knowledge to design and implement a preservation plan for their audiovisual collections.

The Winter School is about practical knowledge: we start with the basis for digital preservation of audiovisual materials and finish with mapping participants' own insights and policy on conserving them. Topics we will discuss during the  Winter School include:

  • Digital preservation planning
  • Digital sustainability and the risks involved
  • Applying the OAIS model for audiovisual collections
  • Ingest and acquisition
  • File formats en data management
  • Data storage and migration

Practice

During the training days, theory will be alternated with examples and exercises, as well as short, educational visits to Sound & Vision's storage and digitisation facilities. Situated in the heart of the Dutch broadcast landscape, Sound & Vision features a state-of-the-art in-house infrastructure which will be demonstrated in detail.

The fourth day of the Winter School focuses on various applications that support the processing of audiovisual materials. An excellent opportunity to put the lessons learnt into practice. Also, there will be ample time to get to know the other participants of the versatile group of Dutch and international Winter School participants.
