Remix Fest poses the artistic question; what is possible when reusing an archive? Through a full-day program of keynote lectures, hands-on workshops, pitch sessions, installations and more, Remix Fest will span multitudes of topics including copyright, archival research, data driven storytelling, documentary filmmaking, graphic design, sound art and beyond.

Students of all levels are welcome at Remix Fest as are instructors, mentors and teachers. With endless possibilities limited simply by creativity, everyone will gain new perspective when it comes to artistically reexamining and reusing the archive.

Programme

Keynote: Rossella Biscotti

The renowned Italian visual artist Rossella Biscotti will discuss the major role of archives in her artistic research.

The work of Rossella Biscotti (1978) interfaces with sculpture, performance, sound and film. She investigates and reconstructs social and political moments from recent history, often juxtaposing the subjectivity and experiences of individuals with the violence of institutionalised systems.

Her works are the result of extensive research processes, conceptual excavations, personal encounters, interdisciplinary collaborations and the subtle questioning of locations and narratives.

Masterclass Copyright

Two legal experts from Beeld & Geluid, Maartje Hülsenbeck and Dennis Hekker, will discuss the examples of archival research and reuse which arise in Rossella Biscotti's keynote. Afterwards they will be available for your questions about copyright.

Masterclass Research & Data

How do you set up your research and which tools does Sound & Vision have available for this?

Filmmaker Pim Zwier (O, Collecting Eggs Despite the Times) has vast experience working with archives. He will share how he sets up his research and how to access the archives of Sound & Vision.

Sound & Vision data expert Willemien Sanders will talk about data research, data stories and how the MediaSuite tool can help you go deeper into the digital archive.

Following this lecture there is a continuous possibility for accessing the archive through the DAAN portal. There is also a workshop on how to tell stories with and from data.

Showcases

  • Various showcases about collaborations with Sound & Vision from St.Joost, Minerva, CampusDoc and XR Lab
  • Rietveld TV: the monthly television show of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
  • Launch of the Archive Working Group: the first master track in the Netherlands for artistic research, archive and found footage.

Workshops

In various workshops, you can delve more deeply into practice:

  • Searching the archive yourself together with researchers from Sound & Vision;
  • Visual artist Irina Birger talks about her work, in which personal archival research plays an important role.
  • Mini-workshop by Radical Data Project (Jo Kroese and Rayén Mitrovich) about telling stories with data.
  • Thunderboom Records will talk about WAIVE, the smart DJ-system that uses AI to create unique music samples, beats and loops from the digitised audio archives of Sound and Vision. At the end of the day, at the drink, DJs let you hear what that sounds like.
