REMIX 2026

Audiovisual archives contain countless images, photographs, sounds and data. Can and should you use them in new work? And if so, how? During REMIX in Beeld & Geluid (Sound & Vision), we will teach film and art academy students about what is and isn't permitted, how to search, and which archives to look in. In inspiring sessions, experienced artists and filmmakers will share how they incorporate heritage and archival material into their own artistic practice.

REMIX - Reshape the past, define the future

Working with archives

Through interviews, artist talks and workshops, you will learn about image, sound and data from the archives. What story do you want to tell with this archival material? What challenges will you face?

Experienced artists and experts from Beeld & Geluid will discuss copyright and blind spots in collections. What does 'ownership' mean when working with existing material? And how do you deal with over- or under-represented voices in the archives? Which stories do you feel are missing from the dominant narrative? During REMIX, we aim to inspire you to start working with archival content.

Kevin Osepa

11:00 - 12:15 | Interview

In his work, visual artist and filmmaker Kevin Osepa focuses on Afro-Caribbean spirituality, identity and colonial memory. He creates immersive worlds in which suppressed knowledge and rituals are revived. During REMIX, Osepa will talk about his work, and in particular about his installation Lusgarda, for which he won the Prix de Rome. The piece is inspired by the 'Ocho Dia' mourning ritual that takes place eight days after a funeral—a custom that is gradually disappearing in Curaçao. For Lusgarda, Osepa used a historical recording from 1963 of an 'Ocho Dia' ceremony.

TARONA selfportrait

Tarona

13:00 - 14:00 | Interview

In her work, Tarona explores how memories and knowledge are preserved and shared within the Black diaspora. She investigates how this knowledge spreads through gestures, places, times and materials, rather than being captured solely in language or narrative. Tarona is currently artist-in-residence for Sounds Familiar, a multi-year project by Beeld & Geluid. This research programme focuses on making Dutch audiovisual archives more polyphonic and inclusive. During REMIX, Tarona will talk about her work and her research within the archives.

Moderator: Giya Makondo-Wills

Tarona is a visual artist and director working across film, photography and research. In her work, she examines how memory and knowledge are maintained and shared with Black Diaspora. She works across two registers: guided by much intuition as by rigorous research, with feeling as key part of her method.

Sabine Groenewegen

Sabine Groenewegen

13:00 - 14:00 | Artist talk

In this Artist Talk, filmmaker and artist Sabine Groenewegen explores how she utilises archives in her work. Her research questions dictate the unique form of each project. For instance, she opted for science fiction for her film Odyssey, whereas she worked with oral history for her film Remanence. Throughout her oeuvre, Sabine critically questions the role of institutions and archives. Other recurring themes in her work include oppression, propaganda, and the silences within colonial history.

Sabine Groenewegen is an award winning filmmaker, visual artist, and researcher. Her films employ a variety of visual and speculative modes to uncover hidden or sidelined histories, bringing them to light and activating them alongside their heritage. Her debut  Odyssey (2018) premiered at Doclisboa and won the Doc Alliance Award for best newcoming director. The Clearing (2026), her latest film, premiered at FIDMarseille. Her moving image work has been exhibited at institutions including ICA, Bozar and EYE Filmmuseum.

Roloff de Jeu

Roloff de Jeu

13:00 - 16:00 | Workshop: Title sequence as prologue

Title sequences, or leaders, give you a brief overview of what you are about to watch and who contributed to the production. Some sequences hint at a theme or serve as a prologue to the story. In this workshop, you will first be introduced to the necessary theoretical context. You will then use archival footage to edit your own title sequence. By partially taking archival images out of their original context, you will create a new visual narrative. Parallel editing, continuity editing, juxtaposition, and the match cut: you will put these editing concepts straight into practice while creating your own leader.

Roloff de Jeu is a film collector, curator and ‘animation wizard‘. Following his studies in Image and Media Technology at the HKU University of the Arts, he provided the visual effects and titles for numerous commercials, television series and animations. He also worked as a projectionist and programmer in an arthouse cinema. He teaches editing, image processing and post-production at HKU. Every year during the Kaboom Animation Festival, he presents an archive programme curated from his own analogue film collection and from the rich archives of Beeld & Geluid.

Maartje Hülsenbeck

Maartje Hülsenbeck

14:30 - 15:30 | Moot court

During this masterclass, you will learn the basics of copyright law. These fundamentals will help you recognise at an early stage of your work or project when you are dealing with copyright. Topics such as the public domain, image rights, and the right to quote will be covered. Focusing on the right to quote, we will reenact a real-life court case in the moot court.

Maartje Hülsenbeck is a lawyer, specialised in copyright. At Beeld & Geluid she advises on copyright issues that arise in managing the collection and making it accessible. She develops policy on this topic and gives (internal) copyright workshops and presentations. She is co-chair of the Dutch Copyright GLAM Workgroup, co-chair of the Value, Use and Copyright Commission of FIAT/IFTA (VUC) and is a member of the Dutch Copyright Association and the Association for Art, Culture and copyright.

Hannah van Tassel

Hannah van Tassel

14:30 - 15:30 | Artist talk

Hannah van Tassel discusses the creative process behind her short film Mijn verre lief. This short film is based on the amateur films of Johann G. Hunningher (1894–1954), which entered the public domain in 2025. Beeld & Geluid commissioned Van Tassel to create her own unique interpretation of this historical material. During this Artist Talk, she will take you on her search for a fresh perspective. Using Mijn verre lief as a case study, she explores the artistic and ethical challenges of working with this kind of material, as well as the questions that surfaced throughout the process. Mijn verre lief will be screened during the talk.

Hannah van Tassel is a Dutch-American filmmaker who is also involved in various films and series as a writer, translator, and researcher. She graduated cum laude in Documentary Directing from the Netherlands Film Academy. Her poetic films explore themes of sleep and insomnia, memory and loss, nature and art. This year, she created the short film Mijn verre lief. Van Tassel is currently working on her first feature-length documentary, Adrift, for which the film proposal awarded her the NPO Talent Award 2024.

Expo

Animation and Illustration students from St.Joost School of Art and Design created new work inspired by political cartoons from the archives of Beeld & Geluid. They either looked for a link to current events or drew inspiration from the material and composition of the originals. A jury selected the 10 best works. Visit this exhibition and discover a new, versatile generation of political cartoonists!

Showreels

Fourth-year Graphic Design students from the ArtEZ University of the Arts have created two showreels of travelogues, featuring material from the J.M. Le Grand collection, among others. These showreels will be screened during REMIX and capture the sense of infinity that world travel can evoke.

Digitisation at Beeld & Geluid

During a short tour, you will get a look behind the scenes at Beeld & Geluid’s Digitisation department.

Mediatheek

During REMIX you can dive directly into the digital collections of Sound & Vision at the Mediatheek. See for yourself what one of the largest audiovisual collections in Europe holds for you!

What is REMIX?

Under the name REMIX, Beeld & Geluid (Sound & Vision) organises meetings that teach, talk about and inspire art academy students and starting artists about the use of archive material in or for their work.
