REMIX
What can makers do with archival films, photos, sounds and data? At REMIX, we show film and art academy students and any interested artist how they can use archival material in their creative practice now and in the future.
REMIX consists of inspiring artist talks, informative workshops and a showcase. The speakers are artists and filmmakers who process heritage and archive material in their own artistic practice in their own unique way.

Working with archives
During the artist talks and workshops, you’ll dive into the archive, hunting for images, sounds and data. You’ll learn what you do with them, what you are allowed to do with them, and above all: what you want to say with them.
We’ll teach you about copyright and collection blind spots. We’ll cover the notion of ‘ownership’ when working with existing material and discuss how one can deal with over- or underrepresented voices in the archive. Because we want to know which stories you miss in the dominant societal narrative? During REMIX we’ll inspire you to get started with archival content.

11:00 - 12:15 | Joint interview
Aimée Zito Lema & Menno Otten
What is the power of working with existing images and (incomplete) heritage? And how do visual artist Aimée Zito Lema and filmmaker Menno Otten create new narratives from them? What are the obstacles, and how do they overcome them? During REMIX, they will discuss their artistic practice, their experiences, and their relationship to creative (re)use in a join interview.
Moderator: Giya Makondo-Wills
Aimée Zito Lema (she/her) is a visual artist. In her work, she investigates the mechanism of our social memory. By using archive material, among other things, she asks questions about the relationship between then and now. Her art often deals with violence and conflict. A recurring question in her research is, “how do we deal it our (fragmented) histories?” Lema is currently artist in residence at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. (Photo: Zazie Stevens)
Menno Otten (he/him) is the director of documentaries such as In Een vergeten moment, Via Dolorosa, Face to Face and The Sacrifice. He also crafts video installations and is an editor (from archive films such as Maalstroom, The Insides of Our Live en Dedicated to Dance) and street photographer. He is also a guest lecturer at the Film Academy in Amsterdam. Otten is currently working on an archive documentary about Amsterdam: De verstilde stad.

Sven Peetoom & Juliette Dominicus
Sven Peetoom & Juliette Dominicus share how, as self-taught Indonesian documentary filmmakers, they forged their own path in the sometimes unruly film landscape. During REMIX, they'll take you on a journey: from the bumpy production process of their short film Indisch Zwijgen (Indonesian Silence) to the sold-out theaters for their feature-length documentary Tussen Wal en Schip (Between the Wall and Ship). They share unconventional tips on persevering through rejection, and discuss financing, distribution, and creative choices. Sven and Juliette will also reveal how, in their film, they use projections to bring images from the past into the present, making the story both personal and relevant.
Juliette Dominicus (she/her) is a documentary director, researcher and videographer. She studied Documentary and Fiction at the University of Amsterdam. With Sven Peetoom she made the documentary Indisch Zwijgen, which was shown in cinemas in 2022. In 2023, Dominicus was selected by the Financieel Dagblad as 'FD Talent of the year'
Sven Peetoom (he/him) is an Indonesian screenwriter and director. He studied at the European Film College in Denmark and made short fiction films and web series. With Juliette Dominicus he made the documentary Indisch Zwijgen, which was shown in cinemas in 2022. As artistic director and performer of the play The Indonesian Dialogues, he was nominated for the DNA Next Stimulation Award 2023.
In 2025, the documentary Tussen Wal en Schip – Geruisloos Indisch by Juliette Dominicus and Sven Peetoom premiered.

Anton Shebetko
In this artist talk, Anton Shebetko will focus on the role that artists have in telling and showcasing easily overlooked and forcefully erased histories and stories. By reclaiming and activating found footage, community archives and institutional collections in combination with artistic interventions, it becomes possible to share and uphold shared history on your own terms.
Anton Shebetko (he/him) is a Ukrainian artist, photographer, curator, and writer from Kyiv who currently lives in Amsterdam. His works focus on the issues facing the LGBTQ+ community in Ukraine, themes of memory, loss of identity, multiplicity of history, and the role that photography and archival materials can play in revealing these stories. Most of his research is devoted to the forgotten queer history of Ukraine; part of it was recently published in his book A Very Brief and Subjective Queer History of Ukraine.

Found Footage by Menno Otten
Under the guidance of Menno Otten, you will work with anonymous film fragments from Eye Film Museum's Bits & Pieces collection. These short film fragments were rescued from the trash bin in the 1980s. They are unidentified images, without a beginning or end and without subtitles: visual beings that have lost their original context that can therefore acquire new meanings. Your challenge/experiment for today: transform these "anonymous" images into your own 3-minute film that recounts/explores your fascination.

Cihad Caner
In this artist talk, visual artist Cihad Caner will take you along his artistic practice, showcasing how his research unfolds and the way he utilises a multitude of disciplines such as sculpture, CGI and installations to approach different historical events and histories, placing them in the now.
Cihad Caner (he/him) is an artist based in Rotterdam. His practice explores the politics of the image through the mediums of film, photography, music, motion-capture, and CGI. Caner’s research-driven practice revolves around (re)presentation, language, marginalisation and alterity. Caner was a resident artist at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (2021-2023).

What is REMIX?
Under the name REMIX, Beeld & Geluid (Sound & Vision) organizes events that teach, tell and inspire art academy students and starting artists about the use of archive material in or for their work. Sometimes in the form of an extensive REMIX Fest or sometimes in a concise REMIX Masterclass. Or, as now, in intimate meet-ups with talks and workshops.
